The Adventure of Living with Rejection

Attitude, persistence and a thick skin are tools needed when seeking acceptance into the world of writing.

Rejection hits hard, even when you know it’s coming. Each time I submit a story to an online magazine, I try to prepare myself for a speeding line drive refusal hit right back up the middle, aimed directly at my head.

The e-mail typically reads like an “It’s not you, it’s me” message, as if our once affectionate relationship is sadly coming to an end. Your writing is wonderful, but we simply aren’t right for each other; your perfect match is out there somewhere.

I did receive one rejection that contained real constructive criticism. Honesty is refreshing.

Actionable suggestions are much more helpful than politically correct drivel.

Post denial options are limited. I can duck out of the way and keep pitching, catch the hit and use it to build my skills or get smacked in the gut and leave the game.

You probably think I’m going for the uplifting, you can do anything if you set your mind to it and work hard kind of article. The kind of article that depicts taking constructive criticism and turning it into a remarkable success.
